It is with great sadness that we advise the passing of Life Member Harold Knights, aged 91. Harold was the longest serving Member of Southern until his passing in the early hours of this morning, amassing over 70 years of Membership at the Club since joining as a 21 year old in 1952.
To quote from the publication Crossing the Road – 50 Years at Southern Golf Club;
“If there was anyone who knows Southern Golf Club, who knows how difficult were the early days and how good were the good times, who knows who-was-who and what-was-what – and probably what-should-be-what – it is Harold Knights. Harold served the Club as its professional for more than 40 years, saw 14 Presidents and 13 Captains come and go and saw a lot of golfers do the same”.
Harold was well known for his coaching with his most notable prodigy being Bob Shearer and was once quoted as saying “Nothing was beyond Bob, he had confidence, ability, everything that you needed. And he knew how to use it”.
Whilst Harold was an excellent coach of the game, he was no slouch either with the clubs in his hand, his best result being a 7th placing in the 1951 Australian Open at Metropolitan Golf Club. In the 1968-69 season, Harold entered and played in 22 tournaments and banked a cheque in each and every one of them.
“But like so many things at Southern, they’re the way they are thanks to people like Harold Knights and the great many other men and women who put a big part of their lives into the place” – Mike Hedge
Today is a sad day in the Club’s history, and our thoughts are with Harold’s friends and family.
Rest in Peace Harold – Thank you for everything that you did for our Club.
The Funeral for Harold Knights will be held on Friday 3rd February at 10.00am, Tobin Brothers, 505 Princess Highway, Noble Park.
